Jimmie Acorn rides Uncle Flick’s back

Hi Catblog Readers! Here’s another Jimmie Acorn story. In this one, our homemade pal makes friends with Uncle Flick, a Yellowhammer Flicker. Uncle Flick puts Jimmie on his back and flies with Jimmie clinging to him. Uncle Flick teaches young Jimmie about Baldy, the King of the Air. Baldy is an American Bald Eagle, who fights an Osprey over a big fish that the Osprey has caught. Baldy wins the fight and carries the fish to his nest of young eagles. Jimmie worries about the Osprey’s babies not getting fish for dinner, but Uncle Flick reassures him that everything will work out fine. Uncle Flick sums up Baldy: “Baldy is very powerful and very handsome, too; but he hasn’t any friends. I prefer friends to power and beauty.” This little story teaches the children that read it that “Everyone prefers to be himself (or herself).” A lesson in identity! I will post more of these appealing stories as I find them. I hope you are enjoying these favorites from my childhood. Your Catblogger, Mark.
